Household Textile Ari
Kasmiri Aree (or Ari) Embroidery is an ancient form of intricate threadwork from the Kashmir region of India and nearby areas. It is a type of two-handed chainstitch or crewelwork using a long hooked needle and wooden frame that covers every square inch of the cotton canvas base fabric. Open background areas are filled in with concentric rings of stitches that are so tight and even, they may appear machine-made to the unitiated.
The completed item is attached to a thick cotton canvas back.
It takes a long time and a lot of skill to create rugs, tapestries, pillow covers and other textiles for the home using this process. Men as well as women create ari textiles. Designs include ancient paisley forms, animals, trees, landscapes, flowers and geometrics. A few tell a story about a journey. The bright colorful designs are stitched onto thick unbleached cotton canvas and backed with more canvas after completion.
Two Types of Thread Used With Ari Household Textiles
There are two types of thread used, silk, and wool. Both wear well. The silk ari textiles are shinier and smoother to the touch and the wool ari is soft and warm. “Silks” typically cost about twice as much as “wools.” While both types are colorful, the colors in the silks appear luminous. The effect is stunning.
In the area of India known as Kashmir (also spelled Kasmir), embroidery is important and has been for many centuries. There are several types of traditional needle art but this buying guide is about aari, a type of crewel or chain stitch embroidery used for all kinds of items, perhaps most famously, for rugs. The crewel embroidered rugs of Kashmir, whether silk or wool, are highly prized the world over.
When Indian ari crewel embroidery is found on personal textiles like shawls, clothing, curtains, and bedspreads, it is also called Kashida. Unlike the other type of ari, it does not completely cover the base fabric. The background fabric becomes part of the design, too.
