In 1973 Alexander Calder was commissioned to create an artwork on one of Braniff's aircraft. Braniff's Douglas DC-8-62 N1805 (originally delivered in 1967) was chosen, and the artist created the "Flying Colors of South America" scheme, which was unlike anything ever seen on an aircraft at a time of more conservative and traditional liveries. His “Flying Colours” Douglas DC-8 was exhibited at the 1975 Paris Air Salon, and reflected the vibrancy of the South American countries the airline flew to. Calder later added another scheme to one of the airline’s Boeing 727s, but died before a third scheme could be completed. Before N1805 ended its days with Braniff, the DC-8 reverted to a red/brown scheme. N1805 flew the last flight using the Braniff call sign from Miami to Dallas Love Field, in June 1982. The aircraft was being ferried to the Love Field Base for storage.
