    THE ITEM DESCRIPTION:
    The Henry Trapeze celluloid wind-up toy has 3 figures including a 5” tall Henry, his 4” tall brother wearing a cap & the 4” tall mahout wearing a turban. All 3 celluloid figure are in excellent original condition with no dents, cracks or repairs & the colors of the celluloid figures are bright & deep with no evidence of fading. Marked in back Made In Japan with the copyright symbol & the manufacturer's trade mark T inside a circle. The metal trapeze frame is excellent & measures 11” across & 8 1/2” high. The metal is shiny with no wear. Wind-up mechanism is working. Card stock tag next to mechanism is original & has Y trade mark plus some inventory numbers 818/4799 & Made In Japan. One of the box's side panels has the
    same inventory numbers 818/4799 printed in the corner & another side panel has
    a small price sticker from a store in Tulsa, Okla. The original price in 1934 was  59 cents. Unplayed with condition.

    RARE BOX VARIATION – PLEASE READ
    This is a rare box variation which uses the word NIGGER on the box lid. I don't think the Japanese manufacturer was aware of the precise meaning & cultural significance of the N word in 1934 but when word got back to the company - probably from the distributor Geo. Borgfeldt - the N word was dropped from the box & changed to “a black boy.” This is only the 2
    nd
    time I have seen the box with the N word. The other, less offensive box is also rather difficult to find. Like the other trapeze toy boxes, the 4 lithographed side skirts of the box lid picture Henry & others engaged in a variety of activities but this time all his playmates are black children most with yellow(blond) afros. The other trapeze boxes showed Henry playing with white children. My favorite is Henry on an alligator with the black boy driver. His blond Afro looks like the mahout's turban. The Japanese toy maker used the trapeze boxes to tell a story making them great boxes graphically but also culturally significant. The original box is excellent & complete. The box lid has the Carl Anderson copyright information, the toy manufacturer's trademark(T inside a circle) & the name of the US distributor – Geo. Borgfeldt Corp.
